What to put on a roofing invoice

An invoice that answers the client’s questions gets paid faster. Here’s what yours should show.

  1. Your license and business details

    Your business name, phone number and roofing or contractor license where your state or city requires one.

  2. The roof and the address

    The property address, the roof's size in squares (100 square feet each), and how many layers you tore off.

  3. Tear-off, labor and materials

    Tear-off and disposal, installation labor, and the shingle line or roofing material, each priced by the square.

  4. Underlayment, flashing and ventilation

    Synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge, step and valley flashing, and ridge or roof vents, so the client sees everything that went on the roof.

  5. Decking replacement

    How many sheets of rotted decking you replaced, at the per-sheet price from the estimate.

  6. Permits, dumpster and cleanup

    The permit fee and disposal on their own lines.

  7. Warranty and how to pay

    The manufacturer's warranty and your workmanship guarantee, the due date, and the ways the client can pay.

How do I handle rotted decking I can't see until tear-off?

Can I work an insurance claim?

Yes. Itemize the invoice to match the adjuster's scope so the homeowner can submit it. Don't offer to waive or cover the deductible; that's illegal in several states, including Texas.
