What to put on a handyman invoice

An invoice that answers the client’s questions gets paid faster. Here’s what yours should show.

  1. Your business details

    Your business name and phone number. Many states cap the size of job you can take without a contractor license, so check your state's rules and add a license number if you have one.

  2. Each task on its own line

    "Rehang bathroom door" and "Patch drywall in hallway" read better than "repairs", and an itemized list is easier for the client to check.

  3. Labor and your minimum

    Hours at your rate, a flat price per task, or your minimum charge for short visits.

  4. Trip charge

    If you charge one, give it its own line.

  5. Parts and materials

    What you bought for the job, with quantities. Keep the receipts in case the client asks.

  6. Sales tax on the right lines

    Parts are usually taxable. Whether labor is depends on your state and the kind of job, so ask your accountant.

  7. Due date and how to pay

    A due date and the ways the client can pay.

Should I charge by the hour or by the job?
